Streak, the Parrot Who Loves Me By David L. O'Neal San Francisco, Green Parrot Press, 2009 With 3 color cover illus. & 2 black and white text illus. 82 pages. Soft-cover. Streak, the Parrot Who Loves Me is a non-fiction book and describes the closely bonded relationship my 10-year old Yellow-collared macaw and I have: our beginnings in Boston, her intelligence, her antics, empathy and behavior, what we do together such as nap, shower, and kayak, her personality, the times she has nearly been lost, our adventures together on a houseboat in Sausalito, CA, our life together in San Francisco, and so forth. The first chapter was published in Birdkeeper Magazine (Great Britain) and several of the original poems which serve as tail-pieces to the chapters have been published in literary magazines. There are very few books of this kind. Streak, the Parrot... is $12.75 postpaid in the United States. Orders from other countries will be billed postage at cost. Like most classics, it will be well known and seldom read." - Mark Twain “The funniest book I’ve ever read—except one of my own.”—James Thurber “Clever! Should be in every sailor’s duffel. A good read, especially when accompanied by several glasses of gin.”—Sir Francis Charles Chichester. “Music to my ears—the verse is positively oceanic and sings in perfect twelve- meter.”—Sir Neville Mariner. “A good book, with lots of arcane nautical lore, but will it float?”—L. Francis Herreshoff. “Si O’Neal había sido mi navegante, yo nunca habría descubierto América.”—Columbus de Cristobal. “Amusing. Nonetheless, I won’t let O’Neal within one hundred miles of any of my boats.”—Margaret Spencer, certifiable US Sailing instructor. Examples NAVIGATION. Traditional navigation, without electronics, is the art and science of getting the boat to its destination with the use of cheap plastic instruments such as parallel rulers, plotters and protractors. Applying the rule of unintentional consequences, or the navigator’s calculations being imprecise, it has been found that the average result of traditional navigation is about 150 miles either side of the targeted landfall. See Circumnavigation and Intentionality. While navigators are indispensable, I knew one who was reprehensible; He attacked a young maid, And made her afraid; At the trial he was found indefensible. e=mc2 ENTRANCE. The way to get in, as to a harbor. If the entrance is long, narrow, and crooked, and is to be sailed rather than motored, the likelihood of reaching the end undamaged can be predetermined by the formula E=mc2 [where E=width of entrance, m=mass of boat, c=average estimated speed thru curves, and 2 =number of sharp turns (2,3,4,etc). This is one of the essential sailing formulas to know well. See CAPE and Vorticity Equation. David L.
